Why is Easter important? Have you ever wondered that? Aside from the cultural viewpoint of baskets filled with candy and presents (socks and underwear is our tradition in our household)! Aside from going to church perhaps for that one time that year. Or to have an elaborate Easter Sunday homemade meal. What is the big deal about Easter? Well, you are on my personal blog so here is my very personal answer to why Easter is so important to me. And why if you catch a glimpse into the heart of Christ towards you, this would be an important Holy Week to you as well.
To me Easter represents freedom.
My whole life, I thought Christianity and loving Jesus meant a life of religious practice, a strict living code (which I didn’t think I could master), and a very boring life. Boy was I wrong! And thank GOD! It’s been my experience that a relationship with Christ has been the best decision of my life. I have found it to be freeing, hope-filled, peace-giving, anchoring, thrilling, painful, worth living, exciting, terrifying, humbling, exciting, and most of all everlasting! Easter represents God’s exquisite mercy and love toward you and me. See before the death and resurrection of Christ, you and I had a dividing relationship with a Holy God. We didn’t get close to having a personal relationship with God it was only through sacrifices and almost perfect living that we could even come close to approaching the Lord.
Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection mean that you and I get a prize we couldn’t ever earn or repay. Our human inclination is to count mistakes, flaws and weaknesses, and the darkest part of our hearts and always hide them towards the Lord because we’re petrified that he won’t love or accept those parts of us. However, Jesus died to endure those mistakes and sins, past present, and future and bore them on the cross for you and me. He endured the pain of being crucified, mocked, rejected, and deeply betrayed to open up a way through his sacrifice to a freeing relationship with God where we can according to the bible in Hebrews 4:16 “ Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
So by this Easter, we are able to celebrate that an exchange was made that has literally won us the lottery! The eternity and richness we crave in our soul’s lottery can never be squandered away by anything!
Easter means that we can be confident that if Jesus is the savior of our hearts these things will always be true
You will have eternity in Heaven and enjoy a life free of pain and suffering (John 5:24)
You can rest assured that Jesus will love you, no matter your behavior, emotions, or mistakes. Nothing can separate you from him. EVER. (Romans 8:37-38)
You can be certain that Jesus will always pursue your heart and a healthy relationship
with you. (Zephania 3:17)You can rest in the fact that you can do nothing to let God down because you can’t hold HIM up. You don’t have contingencies upon his love for you. (Isaiah 41:10 )
You can bet there is hope + peace + comfort for your heart in all your trials and heartbreak! (2 Corinthians 4:8-12)
John 5:24 NIV
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” John 5:24
Romans 8:37-39 NIV
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Zephania 3:17 ESV
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
2 Corinthians 4:8-12 NIV
“ We are hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our bodies the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our bodies. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.”
No matter how you celebrate Easter, I pray that this year it would be even more meaningful to you that you’d allow the richness of what Christ has done for you to sink in a little more. I know for me it’s a process to learn about the REAL character of God and to trust him. I pray for you and your family to have a wonderful Easter.
